Die Cutting Thin Copper and Adhesive

Project description:

3M Adhesive Project

One of our clients attempting to improve their assembly line operations approached us for the production of the die cut copper film product shown here. We worked side-by-side with them to gain an understanding of the product’s functionality and took the time to learn about the issues they were having with their existing assembly line. Armed with this information, we evaluated the supplied drawing, and then suggested modifications to improve the manufacturability and solve their assembly challenge.

As a well-respected converter, we recommended the use of copper foil shielding tape, which features a smooth copper foil backing and conductive acrylic pressure-sensitive adhesive and liner. Our technicians selected tooling and setup a process on our high speed die cutting press to make a kiss cut. Kiss cutting makes a clean cut of the perimeter but does not penetrate the backing material, allowing the product to remain on the liner sheet for easy peel-off during assembly. This task required a great deal of precision because the film and backing together were very thin.

Prior to mass production, we ran samples for first article inspection and approval. Additional quality assurance involved first-off and in-line inspection as well as post-production verification and validation to the drawing specification.

We set up the process to be cost-effective in short runs of about 500 units as well as larger runs of up to 100,000 units or more. By successfully addressing our client’s needs, we formed the foundation for a strong partnership going forward.
